ABSTRACT
West Nusa Tenggara Province comprising of Lombok and Sumbawa Islands has potential geological resources to be developed as a nature tourism destination. In view of potential nature tourism, the provincial vision in tourism industry is ‘Islands with Thousands Charms’. It is expected that the vision could promote the province’s tourism industry at domestic and international levels. The development of geological phenomena-related nature tourism is known as geotourism. Geotourism offers geological description on the unique and rare natural phenomena. In geotourism development, the roles of a geologist are very important in digging out accurate information on the formation process of the unique products of the geological and natural phenomena. The effort is in line with the RI Presidential Instruction No.16/2005 on Policies of Culutral and Tourism Development for Energy and Mineral Resources Sector.
Frame of mind of carrying out a sustainable competitive advantage-based geotourism management can be presented with a flowchart; input, process, and out put to win the goal. Analysis and identification approach for preparing strategic factors the geotourism object organizer of an area uses is SWOT matrix. The matrix describes potential external opportunities and threats and internal strenghts and weaknesses to secure the most appropriate strategic alternative.
To determine the policy direction of tourism development in West Nusa Tenggara as stated by the local governemnt in the vision and mission of tourism industry the tourism development strategies are needed. The startegies include efforst to draw tourist interest, develop the tourism objects, and diversify tourism development, build a linkage system between the tourism objects and cultures that produce tour packages, and to improve human resources and geology (geotourism)-based tourism. For the people at large to understand geotourism industry the information must be wrapped in simple manner and communicated in popular language by the competent departement or institution.
